I'm not in the running for the most Scavenger Hunt posts, but I do want to show my participation. I'm going to try to finish this abbreviated list in the next 7 days.

I often sketch without pencil first and I'm pretty sure these housetops were done like that.

Well, this is the Hollywood Library sign as seen from the attached coffee shop.

This is not a Scavenger Hunt item. It's my sketch from our chilly, but very fun sketch crawl last Saturday.

Scavenger Hunt #3 & #11 Spring Blossoms /light media on a dark background

I thought I would do a combination of two items on our list: Spring blossoms #3 and light media on a dark background #11.

This is a handbook sketchbook (not watercolor paper). I pre-textured the spread with Golden Fluid Acrylic paint. The sketch was done with gouache. These flowers are from my yard.

I did add more dark in places.... and used a bit of watercolor

Scavenger Hunt: Heritage Tree #327

Heritage Tree #327 Mt Fuji Flowering Cherry (Prunus X "Shirotae" ) is not far from my house.   I sat on the curb to sketch (wanted to be ready to get up if I needed to).  I was welcomed first by the neighbor, then her  two adorable 3 and 5 year old girls. Then Nina the home owner, abstract artist  asked me if I would like a chair or pillow.  Very nice experience.

 The CATs are very complex and a good sketching opportunity a block away.

Have you tried Joule, a healthy yummy place to eat 4615 NE Sandy.  I had a Mango Lassi. (yup, I spelled it incorrectly in my sketch).   I sketched my Prunus serula on a previous day.

Yesterday 4/08/19 Peggy Smith and I got permission to sketch during  the Gentle Yoga Class at NECC (NE Community Center).  #One Week 100 people.  I guess

Later that day I went to Case Study Coffee to get a few more people sketches in.

Scavenger Hunt Update

I figured out how to put html into blogger, and then put together a table, showing all the sketches that have been done for the scavenger hunt thus far.  But found, when I tried to publish it, that the thing was too big to fit in blogger's window.  So I put it here ( http://alijc.github.io/scavengerhunt.html ) instead.

Who Needs Donuts?

Since there was a request to send donut sketches in, I thought I'd post mine. It's a slightly different view of the plate of donuts that was also sketched by Katharine.

Pocket Notebook

I recently bought a small notebook that I can use for shopping lists and other tedious daily notes. Since it is small enough to fit in my coat pocket, and the paper has no lines, it ends up being very useful for unplanned sketching adventures, too.

This statue is so shiny and luminous in the rain!

Such as the other day, when I was running errands downtown and found myself contemplating Portlandia in the rain. (Note: flimsy paper + ballpoint pen + steady drizzle = rip city.)

Wintertime Traditions

Una amiga en mi vecindario me invitó a compartir su Rosca de Reyes, un pan dulce que se come para celebrar el Día de Reyes en el 6 de enero. Era mi primera experiencia con esta tradición, pero cuando corté un pedazo para mi esposo, descubrí "el mono"--una figura pequeña de un niño, que representa el niño Jesus--¡escondida en el pan! El mono trae buena suerte, pero solo si el recipiente hace una fiesta a principios de febrero para los que compartían la Rosca de Reyes. Ya estoy planeando el menú... * A friend in my neighborhood invited me to share her Rosca de Reyes, a traditional sweetbread that is eaten for Three Kings Day on January 6. It was my first time experiencing this tradition, but when I cut off a piece for my husband, I discovered "el mono"--a little figure of a child, representing the baby Jesus--in the bread! El mono brings good luck, but only on the condition that the finder throws a party for everyone who was eating the sweetbread. I'm already planning the menu...

Thurman Street Bridge

This is my second sketch of this bridge. I like looking at it. It's a good spot to sketch. Macleay Park in NW. Come springtime, might be a good spot for an outdoor meet up. Just sayin'...

I was waiting for a friend out in front of the Oregon Zoo, sketching the landscape to pass the time. I later realized that this would totally count for the "tree without leaves" item in the scavenger hunt! Also on this page is a sleeping fruit bat from the zoo. Love those bats. * Estaba esperando un amigo en frente del Oregon Zoo, y pintaba el paisaje como un pasatiempo. Luego me dí cuenta que tenemos "árbol sin hojas" en la lista para la nueva búsqueda de tesoro! También dibujé un murciélago frugívero en la página--me encantan estos murciélagos, aún cuando estan durmiendo.

Watercolor and ballpoint pen. Wish I'd brought a black pen instead of a blue one. * Acuarela y bolígrafo. La próxima vez, debo agarrar un bolígrafo con tinta negra en vez de azul.

Today I was impressed by the spectacle of my neighbor's persimmon tree. No leaves, but plenty of bright orange fruits hanging like some kind of holiday decoration. The neighborhood crows were very excited to get their share of the deliciousness. * Hoy descubrí la belleza de un árbol de Caqui que esta en mi vecindario--sin hojas, pero lleno de fruitas colorosas. ¡Los cuervos estan seguros que las fruitas son regalitos de navidad!

It may be cold and grey and wet, but I'm always impressed by how much beauty there still is this time of year. Happy holidays, everyone. * Es cierto que el frío, la lluvia, y el cielo gris es un gran parte del verano aquí en Portland. Pero hay tanta belleza, también. Feliz año nuevo a todos.

Scavenger Hunt: Bakery!

Great team of sketchers came out this weekend, despite the very cold and rainy weather. An Xuyen bakery was full of deliciousness, and the sesame puffs were perhaps the prettiest of them all. * Nuestro equipo de artistas venció la lluvia y el tiempo frío esta fin de semana. La pasteleria An Xuyen olía a azucar y crema a un nivel intoxicante. Estos dulces de ajonjolí eran tan bonitos que tuve que pintarlas.

Scavenger Hunt: Neighborhood Theater

From the porch of the bakery, the Day Theater was resplendent in purple and gold, which harmonized nicely with the car repair place's sign. Notice how the raindrops added interesting texture to the paint. * El teatro Day lucía con una mezcla de purpúrea y oro, y me gustó la armonía con el letrero para la tienda de reparación de autos. Varias gotas de lluvia añadían texturas interestantes a la aquarela.

Scavenger Hunt: Someone drinking coffee.

We finally hid from the cold inside Foster Burger. Alanna warmed herself up with a cup of coffee. She looks so serious here because she was focused on drawing, too--don't worry, we were totally having fun. * Finalmente nos escondimos del frío dentro de Foster Burger. Alanna se calentó con una tasa de cafe. Ella tiene la cara un poco seria aquí porque está enfocada en dibujar--no te preocupes, nos divertimos mucho.

Scavenger Hunt Countdown

With the Scavenger Hunt deadline quickly approaching, I decided to tackle a couple more items.  Here's the always difficult Portlandia...

and Katharine and I thought this might be acceptable as "Person with Dog." 

It's actually some of our public art: 'City Reflections', by Patti Warashina.

I have a couple more to finish up in my quest to fill up as many cells as possible in Katura's spreadsheet. Just a few more days to go!

Weekend Scavenging

Saturday morning was perfect weather for sketching with the Urban Sketchers.

I sat down low by the Ira Keller Fountain, close enough to feel the cool air from 

the falling water. The last time I sketched this was with Tia at the 2010 Symposium 

and I was reminded of her saying, "Add brown to those greens in the trees."

 Here's my latest attempt.

There was a Benson Bubbler right across the street, so that sketch knocked off another

 scavenger hunt item. I wish I had been quick enough to sketch the crow that dunked

 his bread in the water.

I started drawing the elk after lunch, but he looked like a cartoon, so I'll need to

 revisit him another day.

On Sunday, my husband and I rode the aerial tram up to OHSU. (Sunday is a good day 

to go because it isn't very busy.) The ride was quick, but fun and the views were great, 

even on a cloudy day. Drawing the tram is very tricky, because it's only still for a matter

 of moments. I drew the dock first and then raced to get the tram in before it disappeared.

"Pill Hill" would be a terrific place to practice perspective drawing because you 

can see so many different views of buildings and passageways. Here's a one-point 

view that I took from the skybridge to the Veteran's Hospital. I'm glad it's not on the 

scavenger hunt list!

Scavenger Hunt: Fountain

Keller Fountain, as visited with the sketchers during Saturday's sketchcrawl. I focused on trying to emphasize the square shapes and the light hitting the water.  Drawing this made me think about how it would be nice to spend some time with good drawings of trees, and maybe try out some new approaches.  These trees could have been portrayed in a much simpler style, but I flailed a bit and made them very complicated.

It was great seeing the sketchers in the sunshine, instead of huddled against the wind and rain, or hiding out in cafes!
