Portland Nursery Setchcrawl

Thought I might join on the bandwagon to post sketches from our latest...and might I say, largest turnout! Someone mentioned that we had 35 people show up for this event. Amazing.

It was also an awesome day....sun, and wonderful shadows, as evidenced in these two sketches.

Not sure what this machine was initially for...perhaps heat? Anyway it was displaying a proper holiday spirit!

Fall color was awesome on this plant in a pot.

 I took the opportunity to do another quick sketch while waiting for our sketcbook share.

A few people had to leave early and were not there at the time of our share.

Lan Su (wtih bonus Samurai!)

Lan Su was very chilly when we visited last week. I picked a spot to sit that was sunny and then started looking for something to draw--the fabulous rockwork that made up the floor of the plaza was an excellent warm-up for my brain.

Grey and black brush pens can give a sense of depth quickly and efficiently.

Drawing other sketchers can make a scene more fancy!

Coincidentally, my friend Violeta happened to bring her kids to the garden that same morning. She took some snapshots of sketchers in action--and gave me permission to share them here.

The black brush pen has been super useful when out sketching with the baby, because I can get interesting lines down fast while standing, rocking, or bouncing with the darling little wiggler. Here are a few quick sketches from the Samurai exhibit at the Portland Art Museum as a little bonus!

Tanner Springs Park

It was nice to meet up with Deb Linda, Vicky, and Emily on Thursday evening to sketch at Tanner Springs Park. The one tricky thing about this scheme was that my brain was pretty fried after work, so it was hard to focus on drawing...but whatever, they are just sketches after all.

We batted around some fun ideas about upcoming places to sketch. I'll sift through the list and circulate those ideas via the email list, and then we'll see what sounds fun!

Lone Fir Cemetery: Small Gravestones

 

Small gravestones, from last weekend's trip to the Lone Fir Cemetery. I drew the living plants, treating the gravestone itself almost as negative space. * Lápidas pequeñas del cemetario Lone Fir, que visitamos el fin de semana pasada. Dibujé los plantos vivientes, tratando la lápida como espacio negativo.

Brown colored pencil on tan paper gave subtle results. But it's a cemetery, maybe it's OK for the drawings to be muted. * Usando un lápiz de color marrón en papel café claro dió resultados sútiles. Pero, dado que estamos en un cemetario, tal vez es apropriado hacer un dibujo un poco apagado.
