St Johns Bridge and Cathedral Park

What a great day! It was fun watching the people setting up for the Jazz Festival. I especially liked the beautiful but brief sound check.

A beautiful day and a beautiful turnout for Urban Sketching at Cathedral Park. I witnessed at least 2 professional photography sessions.

Newport Coast

My sister was visiting and we went to the beach.  I got a sketch in.

Japanese Garden - Bye Cara!

It was fun to sketch in a medium I don't usually use. 

I will miss Cara.  She is always game for any kind of media!

Japanese Garden

Like others, I used a water-soluble Stabillo black pencil. I went into the restroom to add tone with  my water brush.
We had a great time and we will miss you Cara!

Japanese Garden Sketching Send off for Cara

We were only to use pencils, not colored pencils, no water.  I sketched with 3 watersoluble pencils, when I got home I hit a few areas with water to get the darks darker....

Sketchers and a Tree

I walked downtown today to listen to the noon-time music at Pioneer Courthouse Square.  And found clumps of sketchers already there.


I snuck around them after I finished my own sketch, and found that no one was doing the band or the people dancing or listening.  Every single one of them was sketching the buildings surrounding the square.  So it must have been an architectural outing.

Then I set out towards home, stopping at Couch Park to do a sketch of the Empress tree there.

Sketching Send-Off for Cara - Portland japanese Garden

Hi Portland Urban Sketchers,

Cara Mitchell is moving to Michigan and she's got the Japanese Garden on her bucket list. Let's give her a proper send-off.

• Meeting place: lower entry to the garden
• Meeting date: Sunday, 7/7/2019
• Meeting time: 2 pm
• Medium: Graphite Pencil only (no pigments, no ink, no water) - I think you could also sketch with your IPad / Tablet / Phone...
• Seating options: use their seats only, no stools or easels allowed. No tripods either!
• Entry fee: $18.95.

This will be a good challenge to practice your standing sketching :)

Stay on the paths, but don't block them :)
