Trees and more trees

Our Saturday outing in Portland's Ladd's Addition was set up to have a conversation (with some visuals) and then go out to do trees. Some of the usual faces and some new sketchers were in attendance.

All told there were about 12 sketchers on this slightly chilly and cloudy morning....setting out to enjoy the bold fall color around us.

I was influenced by the examples that Kalina had brought (Shari Blaukopf's trees especially). My efforts, like most first attempts weren't exactly what I had been hoping for, but at least I got to concentrate on this new approach and try it out.

  1. Love seeing the spread of all those tree-filled sketchbooks! And the approach you're taking in your first sketch is really interesting--it feels kind of retro-stylized in a very fun way. Nice to have the chance to push oneself into new approaches!

  2. I think the retro stuff might be coming from the color palette(reminds me of those fifties fabric prints).
I have to work on both color adjustment from the jpegs and my watercolor paints. Sometimes the paints when they first go down on paper are more brilliant/intense than when the paint dries.
We missed you Katura...hope you are well!

  3. Deb, your trees are great. They have so much volume to them. In the top one especially, I am so intrigued by what you leave out. To me, it has a Japanese screen look to it. Wish I were brave enough to paint dark shadows that you use so effectively.

  4. Hi Deb! Thanks for leading the conversation on trees. It was fun that we were all trying to draw the same type of subject. Your sketches are lovely, as usual
