Sketching with the Paris Sketchers

I recently returned from Paris, where one of the highlights of the trip for me was joining the very welcoming Paris sketchers for a sketch in a bookstore...

I also sketched a couple of other sketchers...

not realizing that one was rugby celebrity, Daniel Hererro.

Here are a couple others sketches from my trip...

and if you're interested, there are more on my blog http://draw2c.blogspot.com

One of the many pleasures of urban sketching is meeting up with others who share the same interest. It adds another dimension to both sketching and travel.

recent sketches in Portland

I decided to add my  sketches from yesterday to this post of our recent sketchcrawl at Portland's PSU farmers market.

I hope you all notice that instead of ignoring the people I have actually drawn a few people groups...! All of those workshops may be paying off.

Yesterday turned out to be a rather lovely day to sketch (with Vicky, Janene, and John) and I was pleased to add to my collection of sketches of the construction in the Pearl/Fields area.
As a bonus it was lovely to sit in Tanner Springs Park and enjoy the sunshine!

Weekend in Seattle

I was up in Seattle for a concert last night, and stopped for some sketching on the way back to the train station.

This is looking across Union Bay and Lake Washington, from the UW shellhouse.

Then I went to meet up with some Seattle urban sketchers, across the street from the Seattle Center.

PSU Sketchcrawl

These is something about a nice comfy bench that enhances the view in front of it, in my opinion anyway.  We found a bench and this was the view.
I did the drawing in ink but ran out of time so added the watercolor later.
Someone I know pretty well sat beside me & did this sketch--pretty ambitious, John!
I did this sketch at a Plein Air event at Tryon Creek the weekend before.  Everything had a velvety coat of moss.

Farmer's Market

At our Saturday sketchcrawl I focused on the beautiful colors in the vegetable displays.

After standing in the crowds to get those vegetable sketches I escaped to the library steps near a couple of the sketchers and listened to this honey vendor hawking his wares.

PSU Farmers' Market

A corner of the Simon Benson House, crawling with spooky spiders in honor of Halloween.

This man was busking, playing what looked like two woks glued back to back.  It sounded like a mellow steel drum.

Fleet Week in San Francisco

This past week I was in San Francisco and it just happened to be Fleet Week.
We were lucky enough to see the Blue Angels practicing and the final show.
We stayed with our good friend who still lives in our former apartment building.
This shows a smoke jumper parachuting down near the Marina. They were the warm up act.
This lovely building was a block from us. Very, very rich people live there.
I also included a typical Victorian in the neighborhood.

Sketches in Newport RI

Had an opportunity to connect with a sketcher in Newport RI. A resident of a town has all of the inside info and best sites for sketches. Although I was slightly familiar with the place having visited it many times before my friend Jane's insight added to the pleasure.

3rd Saturday Sketch Crawl - Oct. 17 - PSU Farmer's Market

Let's stroll around and sketch the PSU Farmer's Market and the South Park Blocks!  We should have some nice fall colors by then.  Kalina just moved near there and is enjoying her proximity to the Park Blocks and the Art Museum.  She may have some special things to tell us about the area.

So many things to sketch there.  People, musicians, food, buildings, trees.

I'll be posting this on the Walktober website so sketch-walkers will also be especially invited to join us.
http://walktoberpdx.org/

Schedule:
  • 10:00am: Meet at the Simon Benson House, at the intersection of SW Montgomery and SW Park, for introductions.  Grab your coffee and snacks beforehand from the Farmer's Market.
  • 10:30am: Sketch and stroll around the PSU Farmer's Market, along the S. Park Blocks.
  • 12:00noon: Optional - Meet at PSU Smith Student Center, 1825 SW Broadway, 2nd floor, for sketchbook sharing /  lunch. Bring your lunch or pick it up at the Farmer's Market.
Hope to see you there!

NOVEMBER SKETCHING PLANS

November's sketching event is in the works. I am thinking about sketching at Gabriel Park, near SW Community Center, because it has a lot of evergreen trees. The idea is to sketch subjects for holiday cards. I plan to provide information about getting holiday cards printed from your sketches. If you have any ideas about this, please do share them with me.

Forest Park

Hiked up along Balch Creek. Stopped where it joined the Wildwood Trail and sat down on a log to sketch the Witch's House.

Then all the way up to Pittock Mansion, where I sat down on a picnic table and sketched the city and Mt Hood.  (I was hoping for more fall color than I actually found.)
